FLY FISHING

Hilton Head is fast becoming the fly fishing mecca of the state. Virtually every inshore SC gamefish can be targeted and taken depending on the time of the year. Redfish are the staple here and can be caught year round. However, the best sight casting occurs during the fall and winter months. As the days become shorter and the water temperatures drop, huge schools of Redfish get “stacked up” in gin clear water on lowcountry mud flats. It is not uncommon to witness schools of hundreds of fish in the 8 – 20 pound range scouring the flats eager to take a properly placed clauser or deceiver.

As spring arrives, Cobia begin to show up in the Port Royal Sound. The females can reach beyond 70 pounds but the average fish is in the 20-30 pound range. Cobia can often be seen cruising just below the water’s surface; they are usually “on the hunt” searching for prey. Curious by nature, these cruising fish will follow anything unusual to them, making them the ultimate inshore bait and switch specie.

Summer months consist of fast action with Spanish Mackerel, Bluefish, Ladyfish and Jack Cravelle. Bonita or “little tunny” can be targeted just a few miles offshore. Be sure to ask about special mongo trophy jacks in the Calibogue Sound in July and August.
